also I've spent the last couple weeks reading some older historical romance novels, and my made up, wholly unverified hypothesis that in the 2000s romance authors finally grasped that the old-fashioned "no, don't! stop, you brute" etc. scenes were not really landing with audiences anymore. So they faced a conundrum about the future of the genre. Ultimately, I think they chose to quietly stop writing those heroes, and switch them out for a more sensitive model. Still dark and brooding! But with limits, often a Heart of Gold, and more general emotional intelligence.

Still, somewhere out there is a parallel universe where these authors decided to take the opposite approach---to write heroines as unhinged, cruel, impulsive, and emotionally ignorant as their heroes. I don't know if I want to live there, but I wouldn't mind a trip to their library sometime.

#I read a whole novel about how a man married a woman and then proceeded to abuse her #(in pretty horrific ways I'm not going to lie. there was no romance in that romance novel.)#and because she's so pure and stoic and virtuous she just....cries privately. thinks about killing him. does nothing.#and then at the end they're in love.#where is my novel where she does unhinged insane things to punish him? tries to kill him and he chuckles?#thinks dreamily about how she must be planning her next attack; is in raptures purely because she hates him so much.#that might not be love but it's the closest thing he recognizes.#meanwhile his otherwise virtuous retiring wife who's spent her whole life taking care of her family #is hunched in the corner planning how to add arsenic to his food at a dinner party because socially he will be compelled to eat it.#seducing the blacksmith so he maybe doesn't shoe his lordship's horse correctly.#befriending his mistress and quietly suggesting that if he were out of the way...maybe....it could work for both of them?#freak4freak regency would be so much more interesting than Two Featureless Dolls With Correct Politics #and I wouldn't be forced to conclude that this duke abused and stockholm syndromed his way into marriage.#from the bookshelf

I'm pro 'everyone is capable of change and deserves a chance.' So Im of the camp of 'if he had the opportunity...maybe #The issue is that this setting has no structure to provide those opportunities. You are perceived as a threat therefor you must die #XY is a very interesting parallel to the YLLZ because they both meet the same fate: outsiders determining that they need to be killed #plus both did war crimes. I know it's easy to forget the YLLZ actually did do some of the things he was accused of (most wrong)#but wwx also has blood on his hands. He also sought revenge in pretty twisted ways. Both were given opportunities to step away and refused #The difference is that we empathize with and like XXC & SL and A-Qing. The Narrative says they were wronged and that is an injustice.'

thinking about how akio sees his younger self in utena and wondering if there's any fondness there. doesn't change the horror of what he does to her obviously but i do wonder

#akio and utena #m #long ramble in the tags sorry:#the thing about akio is that he's so evil bit he's also so human #he has feelings. i just don't know what they are (if anything) toward his victims #he loves anthy at the very least i'm sure of that. even if he hates her too. just like she loves and hates him. the lines are blurry.#and i just. i have to wonder whether any of that extends to utena at all. we know anthy at times feels similarly about utena and dios #(and akio by extension.) the simultanious love and resentment. so it's not too unlikely i think.#like. even though he never had anything but bad intentions in getting close to her #i'm not sure it's possible to do everything he did and feel nothing #not that he has any meaningful amount of guilt or remorse for it. i don't think that.#and i obviously don't think he “loved” her in any of the ways she might have thought he did #but did he not care at all? did he not feel any kind of fondness or sympathy or just. idk. pity? for her?#whatever the case it wasn't enough to reconsider having her killed so you know. how much does that actually matter anyway #idk. i think about it a lot. how abusers are rarely entirely indifferent toward their victims #the role he's playing in her life is so fucked up but it IS a role he's playing and i wonder how much he you know... internalizes it?#how much does he believe the illusion of family that he invites her into? because akio DOES often buy into his own illusions.#(similarly i think it's possible that akio is fond of touga too. their mentor-protégé relationship is horrible and abusive #but that doesn't make it less real. you know? maybe real is the wrong word.)#when he talks in episode 25 about wanting utena and anthy closer that's obviously so he can continue to groom her #but is there something genuine there too? i don't know.#again. it obviously does not make anything he does better or even different. but it is interesting to think about to me.#on the other side of that coin does seeing his own past youth and naivete and desire to do good that he (maybe) once had #reflected back at him through her mean anything?#is there resentment there? that she is what he couldn't be? or more likely he just thinks that idealism is stupid.#either way it's something he wants to take from her. anyway ramble over.#i talk a lot about utena's feelings toward akio (familial vs romantic love and the way the two are intertwined in fucked up ways)#but not much the other way around. probably because utena is actually a sympathetic character whose feelings the show very clearly #wants you to analyze and think about.#which is... less true for akio i think. though he's still a complex character with complex motives. he's just harder to get a grasp on.

You know how sometimes, you decide one thing, only for the characters to show you the middle finger, and do whatever they want?..

Happened to me. Again. Max (my Antichrist OC) and Crowley decided they want a story where they're together. Which is fine, I actually like the pairing. It seemed strange at first, since in most of my ideas, Crowley's Max's mother, stepmother or uncle, then I realized it's a stupid thing to let stop me, I mean... Max's mother in this would be Michael. Enough said.

Speaking of Ms. Sword of God, she's not happy. Not because Crowley's a demon, she's married to Satan himself (her own twin brother), she doesn't like that Crowley's a "traitor", and has no rank. Luckily, Max puts momma in her place, and Lucifer is supportive of the relationship. Michael will relent eventually, too.

All in all, I guess I'm adding another WIP to my ever-growing hoard. Though, for now, a coherent plot is yet to dawn on me. I mostly imagine random scenes. Some of them are rather funny, like when Nina tells Crowley that yes, his relationship with the woman he loves might indeed be decided by the impression he makes on a bird. Since, Max has a hunting falcon, and Crowley, being a snake, does not feel easy around raptors.

#Alright I got tragically interrupted while watching it but I'm finally finished watching the episode!!#It's really really good both the animation and drawings are very detailed compared to the rest of the anime but...#The pace is so off :((( Like it's not the end of the world but ugh. It's unfortunate...#So many things just don't hit off as deeply because everything is moving so fast all the time and there's no time to process anything.#They won't allow you one second for the last line of a scene to sink in that the next scene's ost is already playing.#And like it's not even the worst crime an anime can commit I guess but still...#I wish they didn't. Like rather than make a 13 episodes season and squeeze the Sky Casino arc in merely two episodes it would have been–#a lot better to finish the season at the previous episode and make 12 episodes out of everything (so that everything could be better paced)#Like yeah maybe it's not the best season ending that there can be but... It's not terrible either‚ you have Atsushi saying the line–#“there's still hope” and the season ending there‚ that's pretty cool #I don't know why everyone feels like they have to rush all the time.#Guys do I have to be the one to remind you you make more money if more season come out.#Like how can the knowledge of Sigma being made by the book have any kind of impact when we've only known him for ten minutes.#Teruko's looking mad AND looking cutesy AND blowing up the landing zone didn't have the same comedic effect they did in the manga because..#It just happened all together! The way that Mallathalra started off as being incredibly unscrupulous and ruthless, started sleeping with Lae'zel during Act 1, kept Lae'zel loyal to Vlaakith (because to someone who's lived under Lolth their whole life, there's no such thing as salvation, there's only appeasing your terrifying goddess queen and hoping that she'll ignore you -- the status quo will never change, so snuff the rebellion out early and MAYBE you can scrounge some freedom for yourself out of her sight), only to start turning around with Minthara (and, outside of her run, Kitrye). Starting to think that, maybe, a little defiance would be worth it, that it might work. Helping Shadowheart break free of Shar, freeing Minthara from Moonrise, an apostate who she should have dragged back to Menzoberranzan for a bounty, which is her literal job, but didn't. Couldn't. Releasing Shadowheart's parents and realizing, for the first time in her life, that it's possible for parents to actually selflessly love their children. Stopping the Ascension ritual because she felt a twinge of pity for the Spawn, even if it meant losing a tactical advantage and having to kill her former companion.

Only to have to stab Lae'zel in the back in the finale because, despite all her growth, she couldn't save Lae'zel from what she'd done to her, what she'd convinced her to be, and she couldn't let her go through with killing Orpheus.

#oc: mallathalra #technically she got two endings but the one where Lae'zel dies was the 'canon' ending for me #it was what i'd planned since act 1 #i don't know if malla would ever openly say she regretted what happened to her #but it's absolutely going to haunt her #she gets to defy her goddess. she might get to be free (after. some things. i have planned out for her. maybe.)#she gets to go to bed with the love of her life #and lae'zel won't get that #for all that malla routinely committed atrocities i think she might have had some of my favorite character development #the betrayal scene was BRUTAL but i honestly really loved it as a culmination for Malla's arc #killing who she used to be but at the cost of a friend (and former pseudo-love interest's) life
